I'm in the process of designing a low profile winch bumper for the front of my taco, and I'm torn between regular 1/4" mild steel and 3/16" ar400 for the winch tray itself, and 3/16" mild steel vs ar400 for the part of the bumper that will actually come in contact with rocks or trees or whatever I run in to. In addition these grades are quenched / tempered and are also certified to MIL-S-16216. Mostly because of the inconsistency. Our inventory: Thicknesses of 1/4”” through 4”. Can this steel be cut with a plasma cutter to form the shape of the press wheel without distorting or damaging the resistant properties of the steel?I have a customer who is wanting me to drill and tap some 1/2-13 holes in some AR 400. Experiment with larger bottom dies, which would also probably require more metal on the part sticking up on your skids (so it can bridge the larger die).
